What pest control in Phoenixville involves

In Phoenixville the problem usually traces back to the building itself: an old foundation, a damp porch post, a shared wall. A spray around the baseboards does little for mice that come up through a gap in a 1920s fieldstone foundation, or for carpenter ants nesting in a porch post that stays wet.

Phoenixville housing: Iron Works twins, old foundations and new townhomes

Phoenixville Borough is an old town with a lot of new building mixed in. Census estimates put 26.6% of its homes before 1940, and 28.4% after 2000. For pest work the more useful figure is 39.8%, the share of homes that are single-family attached: twins, rows and townhomes that share a wall with a neighbor.

The Phoenixville Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1987, covers 296.9 acres and 908 contributing buildings, including the former Phoenix Iron Works site and the housing built for its workers and owners. Those blocks have stone and brick foundations, wood sill plates sitting on masonry, and party walls that run the length of a row.

Mice in one half of a twin often travel the shared wall, so we check along that wall as well as the room where you heard scratching. Penn State Extension notes that eastern subterranean termite infestations usually start at the basement mudsill and joists, the point where an old Phoenixville foundation meets its framing. Penn State Extension says brown marmorated stink bugs look for overwintering sites in September and October, and homes next to woods are at higher risk. Carpenter ants favor wood that has been softened by moisture, so a leaking gutter over a creekside deck is worth a look before any treatment. Damp stone basements along the river draw camel crickets, which point to a humidity problem as much as a bug problem.

Outdoors, ticks are the other concern. CDC county counts show 934 Lyme disease cases in Chester County in 2023, about 174.8 per 100,000 residents. That is the highest rate among Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County and above the Pennsylvania rate of 128.6 reported by the Department of Health. The PA Department of Environmental Protection says most Lyme transmission happens in June and July, which is worth knowing if your yard runs down to the trail.

Spotted lanternfly and fall invaders in northern Chester County

All of Chester County has been inside the Pennsylvania spotted lanternfly quarantine since November 2017. The insect was first found in the United States in 2014 in Berks County, not far up the river from us. Adults show up in early July and start laying egg masses in September, on trees, stone walls, outdoor furniture and vehicles.

Stink bugs, multicolored Asian lady beetles, boxelder bugs and cluster flies all look for gaps on the sunny side of a house in October.
