Delaware County mosquito, tick and lanternfly facts

The PA Department of Environmental Protection recorded 174 West Nile virus positive mosquito samples and 3 human cases in Delaware County in the 2025 season, more positive samples than Chester County (81) or Montgomery County (133). DEP runs the state mosquito surveillance program together with the counties, and its seasonal summary lists results county by county. Around the house, tip out buckets, clear clogged gutters and empty plant saucers so standing water does not sit around the house between rains.

CDC county counts show 436 Lyme disease cases in Delaware County in 2023, about 75.6 per 100,000 residents based on the 2020 Census. Ridley Creek and the western townships: newer homes near woods

Ridley Creek State Park covers 2,606 acres in Edgmont, Middletown and Upper Providence Townships, about 5 miles north of Media, PA. West of the park, Concord Township and Thornbury Township have grown fast: 44.5% of Concord homes and 44.6% of Thornbury homes were built in 2000 or later.

Newer homes on wooded lots in Glen Mills, Chadds Ford and Garnet Valley tend to see the same pests. Penn State Extension says stink bugs head for homes next to woods in September and October, carpenter bees drill exposed trim in April and May, and termite damage typically shows 10 or more years after construction. Between the new western townships and the dense eastern boroughs sit older boroughs and townships. In Swarthmore 46.5% of homes were built before 1940, in Rutledge 64.5%, and in Nether Providence the median home dates to 1959. Aging foundations and wood porches mean carpenter ants in damp framing and carpenter bee control on weathered trim, along with the mice that find old foundation gaps each fall.

Eastern Delaware County: twins, rowhouses and shared walls

Closer to Philadelphia the housing is older and packed tighter. Upper Darby Township, home to 85,681 people in 2020, has 47.7% single-family attached homes and 33.4% built before 1940. In Darby Township, Folcroft and Clifton Heights, more than 70% of homes are twins or rows. Haverford Township is mostly detached, but 31.9% of its homes predate 1940.
